چکیده
available method used for diagnosis of tuberculosis. Though direct smear microscopy has the advantage of being simple to perform, rapid, less cumbersome, and above all it is inexpensive it has a major disadvantage of having a discouragingly low sensitivity. Therefore, if only direct microscopic method was used for diagnosis, around 22.6% cases with lower AFB counts would have been missed in our study. The signiÞ cant increase in the smear sensitivity from 98 in direct microscopy to 126 by NaOCl treatment in our study may be attributable to clearer microscopic Þ eld due to reduction of the debris. Further, NaOCl method has the advantage of being available at low cost as household bleach, which also limits the risk of laboratory infection as a potent disinfectant. However, it was observed that all the three methods were equally sensitive in detecting positive cases with higher count (i.e., scoring 2+ and more).

Bacterial colonization of respiratory therapists' pens in the intensive care unit.
BACKGROUND Prevention of nosocomial infections is of paramount importance. Person-to-person transmission of microorganisms is well recognized, but the role of fomites in nosocomial infection is not as well understood. Incomplete cleaning of equipment and patient rooms, and medical devices used with multiple patients are well-described means of transmission, but little attention has been paid to...

Nosocomial infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Non-medical objects known as fomites may have a role in their genesis. We investigated the significance of writing pens and spectacles as fomites. The study was conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from July 2013 to September 2013. Cultures were taken from pens and/or spectacles of resident nurses, doctors and nu...

متن کاملEffects of pen design on drawing and writing performance.
Two experiments are reported with the aim of determining the effect of pen shape and size on two different types of task: drawing and writing. Experiment 1 attempted to determine the optimum shape and size of shank for ball-point pens used to perform an accurate drawing task. Twenty-seven participants used a total of nine different pens. Drawing performance was measured by having the subjects f...
متن کاملSphygmomanometers and thermometers as potential fomites of Staphylococcus haemolyticus: biofilm formation in the presence of antibiotics
BACKGROUND The association between Staphylococcus haemolyticus and severe nosocomial infections is increasing. However, the extent to which fomites contribute to the dissemination of this pathogen through patients and hospital wards remains unknown. OBJECTIVES In the present study, sphygmomanometers and thermometers were evaluated as potential fomites of oxacillin-resistant S. haemolyticus (O...
